Our Green Legacy

To everyone that was involved, lent a helping hand and supported our efforts, we thank you.

Our Green Legacy Programme was launched with much enthusiasm and excitement. Thank you to everyone who was a part of such a special programme.

Special Thanks to the Miss Earth girls, Cherise, Keneiloe and Laura.

Thursday the 17th September saw an exceptional initiative launched by the Miss Earth South Africa in association with Consol programme. This time with a campaign launched as ‘Our Green Legacy’. The organization is known for their extensive greening work and more importantly educational programmes that run throughout communities and schools across South Africa. AVIS, Eye of Africa Golf and Residential Estate, AfriSam, Evergreen and Imperial Toyota have joined forces to assist in making the goals of this initiative possible.

“Our Green Legacy has been born as an initiative to create partnerships with corporates and communities in which we are able to leave behind a Green Legacy. One in which, in years to come, the children and community members of a specific area, will have an area to sit under a shady tree, fruit which they can enjoy and a beautified space that they are proud of.” Constantinides went on to say, “In a country with so many challenges, economically and socially, as a green body, it is of vital importance that we do not forget that we need to balance the needs of our people with the needs of our Earth. If we do not, we will cease to exist as we are depleting our natural resources at an alarming rate”.

The Earth team chose Elethu Themba Public School in Eikenhof, as the launching pad, for this initiative. It is a school with many needs. A school that has the will and determination to develop and be a changing catalyst in the lives of the children that walk its grounds, despite the many obstacles that they face. Elethu Themba Public School has been receiving ongoing support from Eye of Africa Golf and Residential Estate since the start up phase of the development. The company erected palisade fencing around the perimeter of the school for improved safety of the children. They have also constructed thatched lapas; one provides shelter for younger children on the playground and the other accommodates food vendors at the school. With the support of corporates such as Consol, AVIS, Eye of Africa, AfriSam, Evergreen, Timberland and Imperial Toyota, green changes in order to bring about a Green Legacy are a possible reality. The day was celebrated with volunteers from AVIS and the winners and ambassador’s of Miss Earth South Africa in association with Consol. A hundred, 100litre trees were planted around the perimeter of the school’s playground, a baron area with no ground cover or tree’s for the learners to enjoy. It will now flourish and become a green haven at break time for the 1600 learners of Elethu Themba Public School.

2009venue
Boracay Eco Village Resort

I was able to witness early on Lorraine Schuck, EVP of Carousel Productions, who was “so in love” with the Eco Village especially with the Convention Centre due to its novelty and its eco-appropriateness and not for any other consideration.
From the moment Gemina Mayo, Project Manager, Carousel Productions, confirmed to me the venue, I searched for it in the internet and I was able to identify the site due to my familiarity. Hence, I was able to announce immediately about the venue for Miss Earth’s fans delight.

Boracay Convention Center - Miss Earth 2009 Finals venue
According to Gem Mayo, “We just want to make sure that all logistics have been smoothened out and it’s a “thumbs-up” for Boracay.”

Regarding the activities of Miss Earth 2009, as you are aware 22 November is the finals. The delegates have to be in Manila by Nov 1. Early morning of Nov 17 they will be moved to Boracay for the grand finals night.

Till then

Lynwood Primary take on Green Issues

Lynwood Ridge Primary in Pretoria pledged, by finger print and signature, to contribute to the Green Movement one individual at a time… The Miss Earth South Africa in association with Consol visited the grade three learners, where they were entertained by Shezzie the Earth Warrior. Shezzie explained the five step programme of becoming a successful Earth Warrior. Learners and Teachers alike singed the SEAL THE DEAL PLEDGE to make South Africa and in turn the world a greener, cleaner place. This would start with small things like unplugging their play stations and cell phone charges when not in use, recycle glass bottles and wash our cars with a bucket of water and not the hosepipe. Lynwood Ridge Learners are well on their way of becoming active Earth Warriors. Every small effort helps. For more tips log onto the Miss Earth website www.missearthsa.co.za
