Join us for Earth Hour

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

earthhour“We have only one planet. Given what we know about climate change today, it would be foolish not to act. Earth Hour 2010 gives an opportunity to the people of the world to unite in a call for action on climate change and to take the lead by making changes in their own lives.”
– Dr Morné du Plessis, CEO, WWF South Africa
For Earth Hour 2010, WWF calls on all South Africans to switch off their lights on Saturday, 27 March, as a symbolic act to send a powerful message to leaders that the time to act on climate change is now.
The Copenhagen Climate Summit in December failed to deliver the climate deal our planet needs. This year WWF is challenging individuals to take the lead by pledging to reduce their own carbon footprint. We have to show world leaders that we are serious about tackling climate change and that we want them to deliver a fair, effective and binding climate deal – a deal that keeps global warming as far below 2 degrees as possible.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu is the patron of the campaign, and Cape Town , Johannesburg and Durban have already pledged their support for Earth Hour 2010.

Participating in Earth Hour is easy, fun and free. All you need to do is:
• Switch off the lights of your home on 27 March from 8:30pm – 9:30pm.
• Spread the message to your friends and family.

Save the date: Saturday, 27 March 2010, 8:30pm – 9:30pm.

We hope that you will support Earth Hour 2010. Together we can make a difference.

Save the Frogs Day, 30 April 2010

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

froggieIn an effort to raise awareness of the plight of amphibians, the scientific community has declared Friday April 30th, 2010 the 2nd Annual ‘Save The Frogs Day’. On this day we encourage the appreciation and celebration of amphibians by people from all walks of life.

Please get involved and help spread the word. Only a small proportion of our public is aware that frogs are disappearing, and amphibian conservation efforts will not be successful with an uninformed public. Our goal is to make the amphibian extinction crisis common knowledge by Save The Frogs Day: help make it happen!

We will be hosting educational programmes – watch out for us in your community creating awareness of frogs and the amphibian crisis

The school I went to is called Resmount Primary school, this is based in Reservoir HIlls, Durban.

I took the initiative to make 33 frog masks to take out photos with the little ones, also 66 origami frogs including 66 colour in “save the frogs”. i also interacted with the children, informing them, that I am a fairy from Miss Earth and I let them know about all the frogs in the world and why we need to save them. we went through steps of how we can save them and at the end i handed to each child a chocolate. it was alot of fun and very educational for all the children. They will soon be adding a pond in the school yard, for the frogs.

Thank you for this opportunity. it was magical. Rizelle

Thank you for the oppertunity today to visit Baanbreker Laerskool. It was a great day, and we enjoyed working with the Children. It was also great to work with Mrs Prinsloo, she is friendly and extremely helpful.

The special needs children were an absolute delight , and it really made me happy to watch their excitement, and also to see their teacher’s dedication towards them. They really enjoyed making the frogs, and kept on asking if they can take them home to show their parents.

The children in general really enjoyed the frogs and the talks we had with them. When I look back at today, I will remember their excitement and also the looks on their faces because of accomplishing and finishing the frogs. They also couldn’t wait for their break to arrive, to go tell the other children that The Miss Earth South Africa visited their classes again. Wow what an honour!

Learners get the Green Rule of the Day!

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

stationarydriveThe Miss Earth South Africa in association with Consol have been rolling out a National Stationery Drive. Stationery was collected from both corporates and private individuals over the past two months. Rulers, pencils, pens, chalk, highlighters, koki pens, crayons sharpeners and pencil cases to keep it all safe, were handed out at Elethu Themba at the end of last month.

Last year saw the launch of the Green Legacy Campaign, this year Elethu Themba’s Grade Fours were the happy recipients. Newsclip Media Monitoring, Legacy Hotels, Columbine Crossing, Imperial Toyota, Proudly SA, SA Garden Magazine, Nadene Devraj, Adilia Teixeira, CEF, Taryn Barker and Wesizwe Platinum all assisted in the collections. Stationery was even received from a group of individuals in the US, that have supported this drive from it’s inception last year. The Barefoot Day held at Eagle Hill School in the US collected stationery from walkers, thank you to Jessy Bonzek and her 1 Mile Barefoot Team for their support.

Three schools in Limpopo were included in this drive, along with Jane’s Haven and Marang Home in Johannesburg. Stationery is always needed through out the year so please keep us in mind… Thank You to all the Stationery Collectors who made this all possible.
