“Your deepest roots are in nature. No matter who you are, where you live, what kind of life you lead, you remain irrevocably linked to the rest of creation” Charles Cook

Children are the future, the younger they are the more attuned they are with existence, the less affected they are by their external world the more exact they are as the image of God. My advocacy is to conscientize myself as well as everyone around me. I deliberately surround myself with children as often as I can so that I can sow in them seeds that will yield fruits of wonder. No matter how tiny my seed or how infertile their ears/hearts may be, I try.

With the tree planting projects I worked with junior phase students at I. H. Harris primary school and senior phase learners at As Teri primary school in the Johannesburg CBD. I could not wait to talk to them. I shared my understanding of trees, their importance, that they are part of our natural heritage, that we ought to respect them because we found them here. With the greater attention span and level of comprehension of the senior phase learners, I also shared how I found them to be “irrevocably linked” to my life purpose.

Trees take in our carbon footprint, while supporting us daily, giving us vegetation and life, they simply grow. It is so important to actively learn more about the environment because the earth is daily conspiring in support of our existence with every buzzing bee, raindrop or ray of sunlight. My life purpose is to grow, grow from strength to strength, all the while enhancing the quality of the lives of the people I encounter along my journey. I implored the students to really ruminate on this.

In the overall, our tree planting was much more than getting our hands dirty and putting something in the ground. It was about giving back to the earth as a token of gratitude and appreciation, and also sowing a legacy- for our children’s children.

“You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the star.” Max Ehrmann
